Delusions of Granduer
Wednesday November 25, 2009
Yesterday, we were driving to Costco to pick up pies for Thanksgiving. I had woke in the middle of the night with a fever and spent the morning in bed trying to get better. By 2, I had given up hope of that and decided that those pies weren’t going to wait for a healthy me. We piled into the car… the kids looking adorable and me, looking like death warmed over. I felt like pooh but couldn’t help but have my spirits raised when I heard this conversation unfold.

The painted turtle experience
Wednesday July 1, 2009

One night in Ludington, we decided to take the kids down and build a campfire for s’mores after dinner. Dan was reluctant to go fishing and leave me to this task alone. I think he was having flashbacks to my previous ‘camping’ failure. After much reassurance that I could handle it, he left to go find some fish.
Now, I can do a lot of things and if need be, I’m sure I could have figured out how to make s’mores happen but Read the rest of this entry »

Dan, Emma, Gerrit & I are sitting in a Burger King after Emma’s state competition this past Saturday. As we ‘encourage’ them to eat faster so we can make the hour long trek back home… this conversation unfolds:
Emma looking next to her at the window: “Ew… a bug!”
Me: “Emma, don’t be such a baby. It’s just a bug”
Emma realizing that it’s not on the inside: “Oh, it’s outside the window“
Me: “Great… then eat“
We continue with our lunch but Dan & I stop dead in our tracks when Read the rest of this entry »
All Dogs Go To Heaven

My friend, Deb forwarded me this email. Whether it’s true or not, I found it funny. I actually have an easier time believing it’s real just because of how often I find people that are ‘religious’ are completely devoid of humor. As if saving your soul means casting out your funny bone. Enjoy!
This is literally a ‘church signs’ debate, being played out in a Southern US town, Read the rest of this entry »
April Fool’s
Friday April 3, 2009

This was the first year that the kids realized the tradition of April Fool’s day. They had seen a commercial on Disney or somewhere with a suggested April Fool’s joke of hiding the soap in the shower so that when the next person went in, they didn’t have any. I have never quite understood how pranks were very funny but I thought maybe Emma could play her own joke on Dan this year.
On the way to cheerleading, we devised a plan. It went like this: Read the rest of this entry »
Gift for Santa
Tuesday December 23, 2008

Last night, Gerrit asked me for a paper that he could cut. I gave him one and he proceeded to carefully cut it into 2 strips. He brought one over and asked me to fold it into a square for him and then he went and taped the ends down to keep it that way.
Then he brought it back to me and said “This is for Santa, so he won’t be sad when he comes and there’s nothing for him” What a sweet boy! I was so proud of him for thinking about Santa’s feelings instead of thinking about what he might be getting. It won’t be the nicest thing that Santa ever got but it might have the most love attached to it.
